ARTIST STATEMENT
My art explores the relationship between structure and perception. I utilise geometric forms and their interlocking lines, planes and intervals, to create works that appear ordered and deliberate while remaining resistant to a single fixed reading. I find rectilinear forms suggestive of systems and boundaries, however I am most interested in how their relationships allow space to shift between enclosure and interruption.
I use colour for both structure and atmosphere. The variations in tone allow individual forms to emerge, recede and overlap without relying on conventional perspective. Surface, translucency and the physical trace of my hand complicate the apparent precision of the geometry, revealing wide variation into an otherwise controlled visual language.
My paintings are intended to operate initially through their formal clarity. I want the viewer to first encounter the shapes, proportion and colour, before meaning is established. With sustained engagement, however, these relationships can become less stable. The forms appear to move between depth and surface, solidity and openness, containment and connection.
My process is grounded in an ongoing negotiation between construction and intuition. Geometry provides a framework, but everything is ultimately developed through the flow of painting and responding to my intuition in the moment. I feel this is why the resulting works occupy a space between order and ambiguity, and invite the viewer to move from immediate recognition, to more uncertain ways of seeing.
BIOGRAPHY
TJL Remington (b. 1990) is a British-Australian artist whose practice explores the relationship between structure and perception. Working with geometric forms, colour and surface, he creates compositions that first appear ordered and deliberate while remaining open to shifting interpretations.
Remington has developed his practice independently, outside of formal art education, approaching art as an intuitive process of construction and response. His work is characterised by a tension between apparent precision and the physical trace of the hand, reflecting an ongoing relationship between structure and intuition.
Born and raised in Australia, Remington has lived in London since 2009. Music was his first form of artistic expression and it continues to inform his approach to cadence, composition and repetition. He works from his studio in South West London.
